Open Top Containers...

Characteristics
This container with its top loading facility is designed for the carriage of heavy and awkward cargoes, and those cargoes with height in excess of that which can be stowed in a standard General Purpose Container. The floor of the container is of hardwood timber plank or plywood, and there are a number of cargo securing points in the floor or along the bottom side rail (generally 5 per side in the case of 20' and 9 per side 40', each with a Safe Working Load of 2023 kgs).

As can be seen from the diagrams this steel container with its removable door header and rempvable roof bows allows loading to be effected either directly through the roof aperture or through the door using overhead lifting equipment. Tarpaulin tilts are supplied to protect cargo. P&O Containers also maintains a supply of overheight tilts for use with overheight cargo. A limited number are available on request.

Notes. The actual roof aperture is smaller than the internal dimensions of the container, due to protrusion of the top side rails (needed to support the roof bows) and the stubs (supporting the header bar over the door).
