The tanks conform to either IMO
type 1 or IMO type 2 requirements, i.e, they are suitable for
carrying a considerable variety of goods and are constructed
of stainless steel and are maintained to food quality status
as they are primarily dedicated to the carriage of potable
spirits. However, subject to availability and compatibility
they may be used for the transport of other liquids, either
dangerous goods or non-hazardous. Because tank containers are
generally constructed with the carriage of a specific product,
or range of products, in mind it is usual for shippers to
provide their own tanks. These shipper owned or leased tanks,
provided they are approved for the particular product they are
to carry, will be accepted on P&O Containers vessels (taking
into account any commodity restrictions which may be in
force). Acceptance will also be subject to the existence of
valid hydraulic tests and valve inspection certificates.
As can be seen from the diagram
the stainless steel tanks are suspended in 20' ISO framework.
(A filling port is centrally postioned in the top of the tank,
and a 76mm diameter discharge pipe at the bottom rear end of
the tank.)

Tank containers have capacities
of 20,000 and 24,000 litres but the actual quantity that can
be loaded into the tank will depend on specific gravity of the
substance, taking into account required ullage space, tank
gross weight and conformity with gross weight limitations.
